Simulation hospital wards, anatomy labs and a four-story learning atrium, built so nursing students train in rooms that work like the real thing.
Simulation only teaches if it feels real. The 148,000-square-foot building needed working hospital headwalls with medical gas outlets, patient simulators, control rooms with one-way glass and a camera and recording system that lets faculty replay every scenario. Anatomy labs needed their own exhaust and finishes. All of it had to open for a fall semester, through a design-build contract that set the budget before the drawings were finished.
The approach.

- 01
Faculty in the room early
Nursing faculty walked a mockup simulation room, set headwall heights and camera views, and signed off on the layout before the floors were drawn in detail.
- 02
Labs coordinated in the model
Exhaust, medical gas, plumbing and data in the anatomy and sim labs were coordinated in the model, with sleeves and backing placed before the decks were poured.
- 03
Recording and AV built in
Debrief rooms, scenario cameras, microphones and the recording platform were installed and tested by our own systems team as part of the building contract.
- 04
The atrium went up early
The four-story atrium steel and glazing were sequenced ahead of interiors, so the building was dried in before the weather turned.
The outcome.
“Before handover we ran a full scenario, simulator, cameras and all. If the replay did not work, the room was not finished.”
Technology systems manager, Tum Harry
